日常生活中，兩人/多人/團體之間彼此因為意見、想法不同而發生口角/爭執，可以用「argue」 或「quarrel」，其中「quarrel」常指熟人之間對瑣事進行的爭吵，而「argue」除了「爭吵」的意思之外，還有「提出理由，佐證意見的辯論」的意思。

想要表達嚴肅且正式地討論某(些)主題，可以用「debate」，此字常用於公司或政府決策討論/辯論社/辯論比賽。若是指官方糾紛，例如勞資雙方或相鄰兩國之間的糾紛，則可用「dispute」。

以下探討argue / quarrel / debate/ dispute 四個動詞含意，針對「爭論」含意的區分，學習它們各自經常會應用在什麼情況；其中有幾個動詞，除了爭論還有其它的意思，也很值得學習。

「argue」 (名詞是 argument)

1.    vi. 爭吵；爭論 (彼此意見不和，發生爭吵/爭論)  

- The children are always arguing. 孩子老是吵個不停。

- Kids, will you stop arguing with each other? 孩子們，你們別再吵嘴了好不好？

- They were arguing over/about which film to go and see. 他們正在爭論去看哪部電影。

- It's normal for couples to argue now and then. 夫妻不時吵架是正常的。

- My mother never takes sides when my brother and I argue. 我們兄弟吵架時，母親從不選邊站。

2.    vi. or vt. 主張；論證；辯論 (提出理由，佐證意見或想法)

- The senator argued in favor of/against making cuts in military spending.

部長提出支持/反對削減軍費開支的理由。

- He argued powerfully and persuasively against capital punishment. 他堅決有力地反對死刑。

- Environmentalists argue that more goods should be transported by rail.

環保主義者提出應透過鐵路運輸貨物。

3.    vt. 表明 (證明某事為真實的/存在的)

- The evidence argues a change in policy. 證據顯示政策有了變動。

 「quarrel」 (名詞是 quarrel)

1.    vi. 爭吵；爭論 (彼此意見不和，發生爭吵/爭論；尤指熟人間對瑣事進行的爭吵)

- What did you quarrel about/over? 你們為甚麼而爭吵？

- She often quarreled with her husband over trivial matters. 她常因小事情與丈夫爭吵。

- The couple was quarreling furiously about whose turn it was to cook the dinner.

這對夫婦對該輪到誰做晚飯而激烈爭吵著。

* quarrel with sth: 認為某事物是錯的

- He quarreled with my suggestion that television caused violence.

他反對我對於電視會引起暴力事件的看法。

- No one can quarrel with the improvements that have been made.沒有人能否定已經取得的改善

「debate」 (名詞是debate)

1.    vi. or vt. 討論；爭論 (嚴肅正式地，討論主題；多用於公司或政府決策討論/辯論社/辯論比賽)

- The participants debated whether social media is a force for good (正向的力量).   

參賽者辯論著社群媒體的利弊。

- They had been debating for several hours without reaching a conclusion.

他們已經爭論了好幾個小時，仍然沒有得出一個結論。

- The authorities debated whether to build a new car park.

政府有關部門就是否要修建一座新停車場進行了討論。

- She is on the university debating team. 她是大學辯論隊的成員。

「dispute」 (名詞是dispute)

1.    vi. or vt. 爭執，糾紛（尤指官方爭執/糾紛，例如勞資雙方或相鄰兩國之間的爭執/糾紛）

- The two countries disputed for years over a small strip of land on their border.

這兩個國家為了邊界上一塊土地已經爭執多年。

- The unions disputed with management over pay.工會與管理層在工資問題上存在分歧。

2.    vi. or vt. 對…有異議，不贊同 =「disagree with」

- I don't dispute (that) his movies are entertaining, but they don't have much depth.

我並不否認他的電影具有娛樂價值，但這些電影都沒有甚麽深度。

- They disputed the election results. 他們對選舉結果提出異議。
